Sometime I wonder what my brothers in the big red are thinking. In this instance they use rivenuts in the shrelf proper to give a way of attaching the support braces, I get it, no nut or washers needed, and supposedly easier for the non mechanical to assemble. Problem is the rivnuts sit proud of the shelf flange, and as a result, there is a gap between the support and the shelf, visually unattractive, and not good for sanitation, I doubt it could earn a NSF sticker as is.I did not measure but it seems 22 gauge, which is ok. On my 48" model the have a galvanized support running down the middle, which is initially pop riveted in the shelf flange having the same effect as the rivenuts. The support is also bonded to the shelf underside with some type of foam sealer, fair ammounts of which are oozing out, again, I dont think the NSF would approve. I am going to remove both the rivenut and pop rivet from both ends, and then attach the supprt brackets with nuts and bolts, and once mounted, reinstall the pop rivets but of course, through the support brackets, and not between the support brackets and the shelf. It will make all the difference in the word, and as such will provide a decent utility shelf in the shop. If I had a dollar for every time I finished, or re-engineered a product coming from the PRC, well, I would have a few dollars! The front of the shelf is rolled and the sides are TIG welded and hastily polished, it is ok, again no NSF job.The little backsplash return is not broken evenly, and has been bent beyond 90 degrees. After grinding off the 4 rivnuts and the two pop rivets, the support braces fit as they should, so now just some nuts, bolts, and washers, to finish the job. This shelf is well made. It's good quality stainless, the bends are all clean and angled correctly, the welds are well done and the finishing especially on edges is good. The shelf poses no safety risks with respect to sharp edges or corners. As a shelf alone it's a five star product. There is one significant problem: the spacing between the holes for mounting the shelf is 46-1/2" on center, not 48" as needed for those of us who want to avoid using toggles or mollies by mounting into studs typically 16" apart on center. One conversation between the design engineers and the marketing folks would have revealed that the spacing needed to be 48", yielding a roughly 49-1/2" shelf. I expect when a version 2 comes out it will meet these specs. Mounting the shelf into solid material will require either adding additional supports behind the wall's surface covering or angling the screws into two studs 48" apart. I have had some success doing the latter. I used 2" x #12 stainless screws to do the mounting.. Bottom line: it's a nice shelf. If it were an inch and a half longer it would be ideal. I vacillated between three stars and four. I chose four because of the high quality of the shelf itself. If you can work around the odd mounting hole spacing I can recommend it. I do strongly advise that you not mount it with mollies and then expect it to hold up the claimed 300 lbs.It is stainless steel, yes. This comes in a very big box packaging, but that's Amazon shipping. The actual box packaging will be a bit smaller, as this shelf comes unassembled. Having said that, assembly is required but it is easy and all what's needed for assembly is provided. One caveat though, the shelf is well protected and covered with a thick plastic layer with some weak adhesive (like a peel-off sticker). Pro-tip: Do not take it all off just yet but just where the edges are. I suggest taking it all off once assembled and fully installed where you want to put it--unless you're okay risking scratching the stainless steel. If this doesn't matter to you, peel away. Another one would be, when screwing in the wall mount piece onto the shelf itself, do not tighten the bolts just yet until fully installed. This will allow you to adjust (play) the shelf freely. Wait until you actually install the screws into the wall, then tighten the wall mounts onto the shelf.Back to the product. It is made of really good stainless steel material, very well cut and welded together. It is actually top-notch. I installed mine in my garage on top of my Dometic CFX fridge that I store there. The 1' shelf is actually bigger than I thought. I wanted 1.5' to 2' but this only comes in 1' depth. The rounded edge of the shelf facing you was a really nice touch. Since it's made of steel, the roundness gives it a more elegant look versus a sharp corner edge. And being stainless steel, it is not magnetic, and I did wish it was magnetic so I could hang in hooks with magnets on its end underneath the shelf. But other than this, this product is a job well done. This is a nice looking shelf and it seems to be strong. There is a support structure that runs along the middle to prevent sagging. The two mounting brackets must be mounted on the ends. I didn't like that the front edges of the brackets aren't rolled, but they are not sharp so I'm not worried about injuries. The shelf comes with some terrible drywall anchors. They rotated within the drywall hole when I tried to tighten the screws and don't appear that they would hold very well if you managed to get them screwed down properly. I recommend throwing them out and using toggle bolts with large heads instead of the provided hardware.
